Heuristic

A mental shortcut that is used in a practical manner to approach a decision or process. It is not guaranteed to be optimal but typically has been found via experience to be appropriate in most situations.  In some circumstances, a heuristic can speed up the completion of a process.  If someone tells you about a ‘rule of thumb’, then they are using a heuristic.
