A sponsor takes responsibility for and initiates a clinical investigation. The sponsor may be an individual, pharmaceutical company, governmental agency, academic institution, private organization, or other orgnaization. The sponsor does not actually conduct the investigation unless the sponsor is a sponsor-investigator.
